Natterjack Toad Walk, Flintshire
Get close to nature by following the distinctive...
Escape busy city life in Cardiff and relax along the banks of the Severn Estuary
This walk takes you along the banks of the Severn Estuary, through green and unspoilt countryside surprisingly close to Cardiff’s urban landscape.
Before heading off, it’s worth exploring Parc Tredelerch, an area of lake and wetland bursting with wildlife (if you’re in the mood for a shorter stroll, you could simply follow the short 1.3km trail around the lake). When you’re ready to go, pick up the Wales Coast Path and cross the road to Cors Crychydd. The route takes you along the water course (known as a reen) all the way to the seawall.
As you go, watch out for animals like kingfishers, water voles, hares, curlews and lapwings. There are also interpretation boards at Parc Tredelerch and on the seawall near Cors Crychydd which give more information about the environment and wildlife of the Severn, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Walking east along the seawall you’ll enjoy far-reaching views across the estuary to the coast of England on the opposite side. The path continues along the seawall where a path takes you to Wentloog Road. Follow the road into the little village of Peterstone Wentloog for refreshments at the local pub*, before retracing your steps back to your starting point.
* 8th April 2022 - Note the local pub is no longer here.
From Peterstone Wentloog, continue another 2.5 mile/4km past Peterstone Gout and on to Lighthouse Park, where you can stop for refreshments at the Lighthouse Inn, or continue a further 0.9 mile/1.5km to see the West Usk Lighthouse.
Wales Coast Path Officer Highlights, Tricia Cottnam:
"Although in an urban environment, you do get a sense that you are about to leave all of that behind. When you reach the sea wall at Cors Crychydd you are able to see the Severn Estuary stretching out in front of you. You’ll catch glimpses of various wading birds here when the tide is right, and being so close to Cardiff itself, it can be really peaceful here".
There’s a car park at Parc Tredelerch. While there are no facilities along the route, there is a café with toilets at the Tesco store near the beginning of the walk and a pub in Peterstone Wentlooge.
